The Countdown

The week in film news

  1. Kate Winslet is off to Pandora

Kate Winslet has joined the cast of Avatar 2 playing a character named Ronal. She is reuniting with her Titanic director James Cameron for the first time in twenty years. It is unclear if she will appear in the next three sequels, the last of which is slated to appear in 2025. It will go on longer than Celine Dion’s heart.

  2. Unbreakable 2 is go!

Night Shyamalan has started filming on a follow up to Unbreakable, seventeen years after the original. The film, called Glass, also serves as a sequel to Shyamalan’s 2016 hit Split. If you are wondering about the connection — spoiler alert — the last shot of Split featured Unbreakable’s Bruce Willis as security guard/superhero David Dunn. He will reprise this role to chase James McAvoy’s Kevin whose character has taken on a new identity: The Beast. Samuel L. Jackson will return as supervillian, Mr. Glass. He best avoid Nick Fury.

  3. The Joker is to be become The Player

Jared Leto is to play the late Playboy Svengali Hugh Hefner in a new biopic directed by Rush Hour director Brett Ratner.“Jared is an old friend,” Ratner said. “When he heard I got the rights to Hef’s story, he told me, ‘I want to play him. I want to understand him.’ And I really believe Jared can do it. He’s one of the great actors of today.”

We dread to think how “method’ Leto is going to for this one.

  4. Taxi for Ridley

Following a quiet time post Star Wars The Force Awakening, Daisy Ridley is now racking up the projects. She is teaming up with current Spider-Man Tom Holland for an adaptation of Patrick Ness’ YA novel The Knife Of Never Letting Go, a sci-fi story about a world where women have all but vanished.  It’s directed by Doug Liman, of The Bourne Identity, Edge Of Tomorrow and American Made fame.

Ridley has also lined up to star in Daddio about a woman who forges a relationship with a cab driver on the ride from JFK airport to Manhattan. She also has Murder On The Orient Express, Ophelia and a voice role in Peter Rabbit waiting in the wings. Breathe, Daisy, just breathe.

  5. Justice is served

The Justice League released a raft of new character posters this week: Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) are all shown in vibrant colourful one sheets. Still no sign of Superman. Perhaps he is holding out for the transfer window to open for The Avengers.
