JINGLE JANGLE: A CHRISTMAS JOURNEY (2020) Phylicia Rashad as Grandmother Cr.Gareth Gatrell/NETFLIX

I haven’t enjoyed a musical on film as much as David E. Talbert’s Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey since The Muppet Christmas Carol. For years the Muppets have been my first choice for a Christmas film, purely because of the childhood nostalgia I’ve got for them. Jingle Jangle wins out now though, because of the beauty of seeing people who look like me represented and celebrated in this genre. Featuring amazing turns from Forest Whitaker, Keegan-Michael Key and Anika Noni Rose, beautiful costuming and sets that are Christmas-light bright, and some stunning, snow-capped choreography; the joy, the talent and the performances are all so remarkable. I’d never found a film that heralded Christmas for me in the way that Love Actually or National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation did for others, but now Jingle Jangle will definitely be played at the beginning of every holiday season in my house.
